Martial Arts have been practised for thousands of years as a method to train the mind, body and spirit. And for good reason!
Martial arts is not just about learning punches and kicks. It’s about developing ones character and becoming the best version of yourself.
Children who get involved in martial arts at a young age often find accelerated progress in other areas of their life. Martial Arts training teaches physical, mental and social skills that can last a lifetime.
In this article, we want to share with you a few reasons why we believe every child should take up martial arts.
1 - Fitness
At Elmswell Karate, every session starts with a warm up and fitness training. This is a crucial element in order to achieve optimal health and performance. We regularly perform exercises such as star jumps, push ups, squats and stretches.
To be an efficient martial artist, students must strengthen their entire body, including the muscles, bones, heart and lungs. Without this, some of the techniques would be very difficult to perform.
With time, consistency and an effective training program, your child will get fitter, stronger and healthier.
2 - Self Defense
Unfortunately, we live in a society full of violence. Self defence and personal safety is vital for everyone and should be taught to children from a young age.
The ability to defend yourself and avoid danger is a cornerstone of many martial arts, including our programs here at Elmswell Karate.
We teach simple “street-smart” techniques to children to help them avoid problems altogether
3 - Discipline and Focus
To master martial arts, a student requires self discipline. This means a student must learn to control their emotions and actions.
The quality of Self-Discipline is a “Black Belt Principle” here at Elmswell Karate. This means that as a student progresses through the ranks, their self discipline will also increase.
Martial arts training is proven to increase mental focus in children. This means they will be able to concentrate for longer on tasks such as school work, exams and household chores.
It is common for martial arts students to excel in many areas of their life. In fact, we have had many students go on to win awards at school and completely change their outlook.
4 - Respect
Martial arts teaches respect for instructors, school teachers, parents, fellow students and the environment.
Your child will learn that being respectful at all times is important in order to progress, not only within martial arts, but also life in general.
5 - Confidence
A good martial arts program will be structured so that a student gradually builds in confidence. A child who sticks at martial arts generally becomes a confident person.
Working through a belt ranking system gives a child measurable goals that are realistic with consistent work. This also teaches that hard work and consistency will equal results.
A motto we have at Elmswell Karate is, “A Black Belt is a White Belt who never gave up!”
And there we have it!
Those are just 5 reasons every child should take up martial arts.
